Mamelodi Sundowns juggle title chase and continental glory as Stellenbosch test awaits

Fresh off sealing a place in the CAF Champions League final, Miguel Cardoso's side are balancing continental ambition with a tightening league title race. Sundowns edged Esperance de Tunis 2-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals, with Brayan Leon decisive across both legs, and will face Morocco's FAR Rabat in the final.

That success has briefly shifted focus away from the league, where Orlando Pirates have moved top after a 3-0 win over Golden Arrows. Sundowns sit two points behind but hold two games in hand, putting control of the race firmly in their hands if form continues.

The Brazilians have been relentless in 2026, winning 10 straight league matches and remaining unbeaten domestically since January. Their last league outing, a narrow win over Durban City, reinforced their dominance and status as favourites for a ninth consecutive title.

The challenge now is managing fatigue and expectations. Sundowns face seven fixtures in 25 days, including the two-legged Champions League final. Cardoso has leaned on rotation, trusting squad depth - a move that has paid off.

Fringe players like Tashreeq Matthews, Arthur Sales and Leon have stepped up, while regulars such as Iqraam Rayners and Marcelo Allende have been managed carefully. Even in defence, absences have been covered well by players like Khulumani Ndamane and Divine Lunga.

That next task is a Stellenbosch side finding consistency under Gavin Hunt. Since his arrival, they have taken 19 points from nine matches, losing just once.

A 3-1 win over Sekhukhune United lifted Stellies to ninth, within reach of an MTN8 place, though their away form remains a concern. Facing Sundowns in Pretoria is one of the toughest assignments in the league.

Historically, this fixture has heavily favoured Sundowns, who have won seven of the last 10 meetings. Stellenbosch have never won a league match at Loftus Versfeld, and their only notable success - a 3-0 win in 2022 - remains an exception.

Earlier this season, Sundowns claimed a 1-0 win through Marcelo Allende, with Stellenbosch struggling to create chances.

A win would see Sundowns reclaim top spot from Pirates, potentially with a game in hand - a psychological boost in the title race.
