Michael Carrick 'down plays' Man Utd statement win over Arsenal

The result extending his perfect start in charge and silencing the Emirates while United supporters dared to dream.

United claimed their first league win at Arsenal since December 2017 as goals from Bryan Mbeumo, Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha sealed an eye-catching result against the league leaders. The win followed last week's 2-0 home success over Manchester City and lifted United into the Champions League qualification places, although they remain 12 points behind Arsenal with 15 league matches still to play.

Despite the momentum, Carrick was quick to play down any talk of a title charge and urged his players to stay focused, starting with Fulham's visit to Old Trafford next Sunday.

"I'm not getting carried away," Carrick said. "We've got some big games, bigger games, coming up, because every next game is the bigger game. We've got really important things coming up that we need to keep improving with.

"There's a lot of emotion, a lot of energy and a lot of confidence you can take from beating City and Arsenal, but you have to be humble and understand how you've got those results. That's really important moving forward."

Carrick, who was appointed until the end of the season following the departure of Ruben Amorim, also brushed aside questions about his long-term future.

"What happens next, I'm not going to be answering it every week," he said. "I'm enjoying it and I'll continue to do what I can. It's been less than two weeks together, so it's about building good habits and routines. The boys have been fantastic with that.

"We won't look too far ahead. We'll finish where we finish by taking it week by week, game by game."

The only concern from the win was Dorgu limping off late on, but Carrick played down the issue.

"Pat's been a big player for us, attacking and defensively," Carrick added. "He put so much into his performance. He came off with a bit of cramp, so hopefully it's nothing more than that."
