Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi will stand trial for alleged 2023 rape charge

Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi will stand trial for alleged 2023 rape charge

The Versailles Court of Appeal confirmed the decision to send the Paris Saint-Germain defender to a criminal court, where he will face proceedings over an accusation brought by a woman in February 2023. Hakimi has consistently denied the allegation and maintains that he is innocent.

The 27-year-old right-back, who captains the Moroccan national team and remains a key player for PSG, said he had been waiting for the opportunity to present his side of the story.

In a statement shared on social media, Hakimi said: "I chose to remain silent for years. I thought that staying dignified, being patient, and trusting the justice system would allow the right decisions to be made."

The defender added that he believed the case had affected his personal life and family, saying: "Today, a story that is not mine is being told at the expense of my family, my life, and above all, the truth."

Hakimi also said he welcomed the next stage of the legal process, stating: "I've been waiting for this trial since day one and now I'm looking forward to it. Finally, I will be able to speak."

The allegation was first reported in February 2023, when a woman told police in the Val-de-Marne region, southeast of Paris, that Hakimi had raped her. The player was later placed under formal investigation, but he has rejected the accusation.

Despite the legal proceedings, Hakimi has continued his football career and remained an important figure for both PSG and Morocco. The defender has featured for Morocco during their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, with the national team preparing for a crucial second group match against Scotland on Saturday morning (SA time).
