Mosimane earmarks Orlando Pirates star Chaine for Bafana Bafana captaincy

The new South African head coach released his first squad earlier this week following his return to the national team setup and has announced plans to shake up the leadership positions within the team.

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was the designated captain under former Belgian mentor Hugo Broos during the latter's five-year spell with Bafana.

However, Mosimane has now explained his new philosophy regarding the captaincy ahead of the opening 2027 African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea later this month.

"I believe in leadership in many ways," said Mosimane after the squad announcement.

"So, we won't have one captain. We have a few captains, and I will choose sometimes a captain of the day. Because if [Kylian] Mbappe is a captain, I think we can also have a young captain. The captain doesn't have to be a player because he's 38 or 35, okay.

"Themba Zwane is one of my captains, by the way. So, we need young captains. We need young boys to lead and learn how to be a captain."

Williams has led the side in more than 40 of his 63 international caps since taking the armband in a friendly match against Namibia in 2020.

"One captain, I don't believe in that because if you are injured, then you're not there," added Jingles.  

"And also, the captain must always be playing, right? Chaine is going to be one of the captains, the same as Ronwen. He will remain my captain. Let's go for it, let's open this thing."
