NFF leadership resigns amid Nigeria's national team crisis

NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau, general secretary Mohammed Sanusi and the federation's entire executive committee stepped down on Thursday, August 27, following mounting pressure over the state of Nigerian football, Pan African Vision reported.

Gusau, who had led the federation since September 2022, was just 34 days away from completing his four-year term. He said his resignation was aimed at creating space for broader reforms and a fresh direction for Nigerian football.

The leadership shake-up comes after a difficult period for the country's national teams. The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Falcons suffered the unprecedented setback of missing out on the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.

The Falcons' failure has been particularly damaging to Nigeria's football standing, given that they had appeared at every edition of the Women's World Cup since the tournament was launched in 1991.

However, the problems facing the NFF extend beyond disappointing results on the pitch. The federation has come under scrutiny over its governance and financial management, including questions surrounding a N17 billion federal intervention fund released in 2024 to help settle financial obligations involving the national teams.

The combination of poor qualification campaigns, financial concerns and growing public dissatisfaction has placed the federation under intense pressure and ultimately contributed to the dramatic leadership changes.

The timing of the resignations could also complicate the NFF's transition process. Delegates are scheduled to gather in Lafia on September 27 for an elective congress, where a new administration is expected to be chosen.

With the current leadership now gone, attention will turn to how the federation manages its affairs in the weeks leading up to the congress and whether the election timetable will remain unchanged.

Whoever takes charge will inherit an organisation facing significant challenges. Restoring public confidence, strengthening financial accountability and improving governance will be just as important as rebuilding Nigeria's national teams.

The mass resignations may therefore mark more than the end of Gusau's administration. They could represent the beginning of a major reset for Nigerian football.
