The Brazilian has not attended Forest's last three matches against Fenerbahçe, Brighton and Manchester City, fuelling speculation over his position.
While the club have declined to comment, sources close to Forest insist Edu continues to work as normal.
Forest are enduring a turbulent season and sit 17th in the Premier League, level on points with West Ham and outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.
Edu joined the club in July to oversee recruitment and football strategy, but his tenure has coincided with major instability. Forest have already gone through four managers this season, with Vitor Pereira the latest to take charge after the departures of Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou and Sean Dyche.
The club have also spent close to 200 million pounds on new players since the end of last season, a recruitment drive Edu has played a central role in. However, results have not improved and his role is now under scrutiny.
Reports in Brazil suggest Flamengo are monitoring the situation as they consider replacements for sporting director Jose Boto. For now, Forest's immediate focus remains their battle to avoid relegation.
