Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi demands three points in Soweto Derby

Orlando Pirates captain Nkosinathi Sibisi demands three points in Soweto Derby

With the Betway Premiership title race entering its decisive phase, Pirates remain locked in pursuit of Mamelodi Sundowns, making the clash at FNB Stadium far more than just a battle for bragging rights.

Sibisi, who captains the Buccaneers, acknowledged the magnitude of the encounter but stressed that focus must remain on delivering a performance worthy of the occasion.

"We are looking forward to a very competitive game on Sunday. It is going to be a spectacle," Sibisi said in the build-up to the match against their rivals.

The defender says the derby carries weight not only because of its history, but also its potential impact on the title race. Pirates know that any slip-up could hand the advantage back to Sundowns, while victory would keep the pressure firmly on the reigning champions.

"We know it's a game of consequence, so we have to deliver - and that's what we are going to do on Sunday," he added.

Pirates have dominated the last five league encounters against Amakhosi, with the last meeting seeing the Sea Robbers beating the Glamour Boys 3-0. But, going into this game, Sibisi knows very well that past results don't matter.

"This sort of game is something special regardless of previous results. It doesn't matter - it doesn't count for anything," he explained.

As anticipation builds, Pirates will be counting on their captain's composure and leadership to navigate one of the most demanding fixtures on the South African football calendar - with three points potentially shaping the destiny of their season.

Pirates are currently on top of the league standings with 58 points after 25 matches in their quest for the Championship title, while second placed Mamelodi Sundowns have collected 57 points, but they have played 24 matches.
