Ismaila Sarr (53', 90+3') netted a brace at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Monday but it wasn't enough after Marcus Pedersen's opening goal was followed up by a brace from Erling Haaland (48', 58')
The Lions of Teranga started their World Cup campaign with a 3-1 loss to favourites France but can still progress as one of eight best third placed teams with a convincing victory over Iraq in their final group match.
France top the group with six points, followed by Norway, also on six points. Senegal and Iraq both have zero points.
Thiaw told Reuters, “We have got one match to go, and we need to focus on this last game, and try it and get three points and then cross our fingers.
"I think it is a little bit too early to say that we failed. We are not dead. We are not in a good position, and it is true that it is the first time that Senegal has started a World Cup campaign with two defeats.
"But we have still got a chance to qualify, and we are going to focus on the last game. We want to try and get those three points and hope that we can go through.
"Once you are in the next round, then it’s another tournament that starts.”
