Pierre Sage targets higher standards after Crystal Palace's strong pre-season start

Eddie Nketiah marked his return by finding the back of the net, while Matheus Franca produced an outstanding second-half display, scoring a hat-trick to lead Palace to an impressive opening win.

Despite the comfortable result, Sage insisted there is still plenty of work to do as the squad builds fitness ahead of the new season.

The Palace boss admitted his players struggled at times in possession during the first half and highlighted ball retention as an area that needs improvement.

"We had problems with the ball and I think we have to work on this to be better," Sage told the club's media team.

He explained that the players are still in the early stages of their pre-season preparations and are not yet capable of maintaining their highest level for long periods.

"But at the moment the players are only able to play 15-20 minutes at the top level. It's only the first week, so we need more sessions."

Sage pointed out that the squad has only completed five training sessions together and expects to see further progress as they continue working.

"We've only had five sessions together. And we won't have just five anymore, so I think the next game will be better."

The French coach also praised the attitude of his players, saying they have embraced his methods and are working hard every day.

"But we have a good condition. We have a group who want to work with us. I think they give their best every day.

"I think this is a good way to improve, both as players and as the team. I think we will continue like this."
