The former Arsenal captain was appointed as the new coach of the Lions of Teranga several weeks ago, replacing Pape Thiaw, but had not publicly commented on the move until now.
Vieira confirmed his arrival on Monday with a message on Instagram, saying he was eager to begin work with his new players.
"Honoured and proud to join Senegal as head coach of the national A team," Vieira wrote.
"I thank the Senegalese Football Federation for their confidence.
"I am looking forward to meeting the group and starting work together on the next steps."
Vieira will be officially presented as Senegal coach on Friday at the Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium in Dakar. He will also announce his first squad during the press conference.
The 50-year-old takes over after Thiaw was dismissed following Senegal's disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign.
Senegal lost their opening two group matches against France and Norway before suffering a dramatic 3-2 defeat by Belgium in the last 32. The Lions of Teranga had led 2-0 before conceding three late goals.
Vieira now faces the task of preparing Senegal for their next 2027 AFCON qualifying matches.
Senegal will travel to Maputo to face Mozambique on September 25 before playing Ethiopia in Bahir Dar four days later. They will then face Comoros in a friendly at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille on October 4.
For Vieira, the appointment represents a return to the country where he was born, although he enjoyed his international career with France.
The former midfielder won 107 caps for Les Bleus between 1997 and 2010 and was part of the France teams that won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. He also represented his country at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups and Euro 2004 and Euro 2008.
Vieira moved into coaching after retiring from playing, starting with Manchester City's academy before taking charge of New York City FC.
He later managed Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa, gaining experience in France, England, the United States and Italy.
He will now begin a new chapter by attempting to guide Senegal towards another AFCON campaign and build a team capable of challenging for major honours.
