Real Madrid stretched defensively as Alvaro Arbeloa braces for Villarreal clash

Speaking before the clash at the Estadio de la Ceramica on January 24, Arbeloa stressed the difficulty of the fixture and the importance of maintaining momentum as Madrid look to keep pace with Barcelona at the top of the table.

"We know how hard it is to play there," Arbeloa said. "Villarreal always push you, and every detail matters if we want to stay strong in the title race."

Madrid arrive in good spirits after a dominant 6-1 win over Monaco, and Arbeloa was keen to protect that confidence. "This club is about passion, character, the fans and hard work," he said. "We have to keep that mentality every week."

However, preparation has been disrupted by a growing injury list in defence. The club has confirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold, Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger will all miss the match. Raul Asencio is expected to recover from a knock to the leg and should be available, but remains closely monitored.

Dean Huijsen is currently the only fully fit natural centre-back, while David Alaba's fitness remains uncertain. Matters are made worse by the suspension of Aurelien Tchouameni, who picked up his fifth yellow card in the previous league game and will not travel.

Arbeloa also confirmed that Rodrygo will be rested after a demanding recent run, while stressing the importance of keeping Vinicius Junior settled and motivated. "We need Vini if we want to fight for all the trophies," he said.

With defensive options limited, Arbeloa may be forced to improvise again, including possible youth involvement or tactical reshuffles. For Madrid, solving these recurring issues at the back could be just as decisive as anything that happens on the ball.
