Sancho's journey since his 73 million pounds move to Manchester United in 2021 has been turbulent. After dazzling at Dortmund from 2017 to 2021 alongside stars like Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham, he struggled to replicate that form at Old Trafford.
His time there included just 12 goals in 82 appearances, a public fallout with manager Erik ten Hag in 2023, and a period training separately due to disciplinary issues.
Loan spells offered temporary respite. In early 2024, Sancho (25) returned to Dortmund, where he provided three assists and scored twice in 14 Bundesliga games, helping them reach the Champions League final.
A subsequent loan to Chelsea in 2024-25 saw him contribute four goals and five assists, culminating in a Conference League triumph. However, Chelsea opted against a permanent deal, paying United a 5 million pounds penalty to cancel an obligation to buy.
Now, with his United contract running until 2026, Sancho faces a pivotal moment. German outlet BILD reported that he earns approximately 16 million euros annually at United but is prepared to accept around 8 million euros at Dortmund, a figure that would place him below their top earner, Donyell Malen, at 14 million euros.
"Sancho knows his next move must be the right one," BILD noted, emphasizing his determination to avoid another career setback.
Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg posted on X: "Borussia Dortmund are actively working on a transfer for Jadon Sancho, exploring a third return. Talks are ongoing."
Dortmund's sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, fueled speculation, telling Sky: "We have various targets. We will still do something before the window closes."
Manchester United, keen to offload Sancho permanently, have reduced their asking price to around 20 million pounds, per German journalist Patrick Berger. Whether Dortmund pursue a loan or a permanent deal remains unclear, but their interest is concrete.
Sancho's potential return to Dortmund, where he scored 50 goals and provided 64 assists in 137 games during his first stint, could reignite a career that once promised superstardom. For United, it marks the end of a challenging chapter, while Dortmund fans eagerly await the return of a prodigal son.
Plettenberg shared on X: "Dortmund's talks for Sancho are advancing, with the player's camp open to a swift resolution." No official statements from United, Dortmund, or Sancho have emerged as of August 1.
