Hugo Ekitike embraces Alexander Isak challenge after record Liverpool signing
Hugo Ekitike has embraced the high-stakes competition at Liverpool following the club's British-record 125 million pound signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
Trabzonspor have initiated contact with United regarding the terms of a deal, and a verbal agreement has reportedly been reached, though the final decision now rests with Onana. The 29-year-old is currently on international duty with Cameroon ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, which begins in December.
United are open to offers for Onana following the deadline-day signing of Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. Despite having a contract at Old Trafford that runs until 2028, Onana’s prospects for regular first-team football have diminished. Altay Bayindir has started all three of United's Premier League games this season, while veteran Tom Heaton, 39, remains part of the squad as a backup option.
Although United officials have stated they are comfortable retaining four senior goalkeepers this season, that position reportedly contrasts with head coach Ruben Amorim’s preference for a more streamlined squad, especially in a campaign without European football.
Onana joined the Red Devils in July 2023 from Inter Milan in a deal worth up to 47.2 million pounds, becoming the club's first-choice goalkeeper under then-manager Erik ten Hag, who had previously worked with him at Ajax. However, Onana's tenure has been marked by inconsistency and high-profile errors, including a costly mistake in the recent Carabao Cup defeat to League Two side Grimsby Town in his only appearance of the season.
