Retired legend Aiyegbeni Yakubu reveals where Nigeria got it wrong

Nigeria's journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in disappointment after a penalty-shootout defeat to DR Congo in the decisive play-off. While Osimhen's injury at halftime undeniably hurt the team, Yakubu believes the match simply highlighted long-standing weaknesses in Nigeria's attacking identity and tactical organisation.

Osimhen had been pivotal throughout the qualifiers, scoring five goals across two key matches against Gabon to carry the Super Eagles into the play-offs. But when the Napoli striker was forced off with a hamstring injury at the break, Nigeria's performance fell apart.

The team failed to register a single shot on target for the rest of the game — including extra time — raising concerns about their lack of creativity and attacking structure.

"The moment Osimhen went out against DR Congo, I knew the game was finished," the former Premier League forward told Pulse Sports Nigeria.

"In the second half, Congo were much better… We were tactless. No game plan."

His criticism extended to the substitutions, as the introduction of Tolu Arokodare brought no spark to Nigeria's frontline. The Super Eagles failed to build momentum or create meaningful chances, while DR Congo grew increasingly confident and threatening.

With the World Cup dream over, attention now shifts to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Yakubu insists that Nigeria must rethink their approach and stop relying on individual brilliance to paper over tactical flaws.

The Super Eagles will need to show a clearer identity, improved structure, and greater resilience if they hope to win back the trust of their supporters.
