The 23-year-old shared wordless Instagram stories celebrating the New Year with friends after missing the Gunners' 4-1 win over Aston Villa on December 30.
Calafiori has been a key figure in Arteta's defensive unit since joining Arsenal, but the exact nature of his muscular injury remains unclear. He previously missed the 2-1 victory over Brighton on December 27 after the problem flared up during the warm-up.
"It's something that he felt yesterday, it's something very awkward that happened, and today in the warm-up he wasn't comfortable," Arteta said. The manager added that the defender's determination has been clear: "We need a cage there because he wants to go out, train and play. We need to calm him down because he is so willing."
Arteta also explained that Arsenal are carefully managing Calafiori's fitness due to minor niggles in recent weeks. "He has had a few niggles in the past few weeks, we've had to manage his minutes," he said.
On the prospect of Calafiori being available for the upcoming Premier League clash at Bournemouth on Saturday or the game against Liverpool on January 8, Arteta added: "We are going to do our very very best to have them (Saka, Timber, Calafiori) ready but it's very uncertain."
Calafiori's return will be assessed in training over the coming days, and Arsenal fans will hope to see him back in action soon during a busy January schedule.
Calafiori has played a total of 20 games for Arsenal across all competitions this season
