Spain boss Luis de la Fuente backs Lamine Yamal to shine against Portugal

The 18-year-old Barcelona winger produced an impressive display in Spain's convincing 3-0 victory over Austria in the previous round, although he did not get on the scoresheet. De la Fuente believes the teenager thrives on the biggest stages and is ready for another major test against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal.

"I know that Lamine loves these kinds of games," De la Fuente said before the match.

"He likes to be the focus, he likes the responsibility, and he likes to take the initiative. This is good because he's proactive."

The Spain coach praised the youngster's mentality and talent, adding: "It's truly a pleasure to see a footballer with these qualities."

Yamal, like Spain, has improved as the tournament has progressed after recovering from the hamstring injury that disrupted his preparations before the competition in North America.

Spain began their World Cup campaign with a frustrating goalless draw against tournament debutants Cape Verde, but they have responded in impressive fashion. The European champions have won their last three matches without conceding a goal and now head into the meeting with Portugal full of confidence.

De la Fuente also highlighted Yamal's development away from the ball, saying the winger has embraced the defensive side of his game against top-quality opponents.

"He's always willing to do more," De la Fuente said.

"He is very well aware that, as part of his growth, this is something that is required of him."

The Spain manager added that he had been delighted with the attitude shown by both Yamal and the rest of the squad throughout the tournament.

"I am very pleased with what he's doing. The entire team are very pleased with what they're doing."
