Sphephelo Sithole open to PSL giants as he eyes exit from Portugal

He admits that a switch to one of South Africa's traditional PSL heavyweights would be an attractive next step in his career.

The 26-year-old, affectionately known as Yaya, recently put pen to paper on a new contract with Tondela that will keep him at the club until June 2027.

However, despite the long-term deal, Sithole has hinted that a transfer could still materialise should the right opportunity arise.

Prior to signing the extension, the former KZN Academy graduate was strongly linked with Betway Premiership giants Kaizer Chiefs, while interest from other leagues was also believed to be on the table.

Ultimately, Sithole opted to remain in Portugal, where he has spent the bulk of his professional career since moving to Europe in 2018.

While content with life abroad, the midfield engine believes the time may be right for a fresh challenge.

"For my future, that's a good question. After this tournament, I want to get a better opportunity to go and play somewhere else," Sithole told the media.

"I've been in Portugal for eight years, close to nine now, so for me to go somewhere else, maybe outside of Portugal, if things go well, that can be good for my career."

Addressing his recent contract renewal, Sithole suggested it does not necessarily close the door on a move.

"Yes, I have just signed a new deal, but there were talks around it. If everything goes well, a move can still happen," he added.

When asked directly whether he would consider joining one of the PSL's ‘big three' — Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns — Sithole offered a brief but telling response: "Yes."

Sithole will now look to focus on international duty, hoping to impress potential suitors when Bafana Bafana take on Cameroon in their Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 clash on Sunday.
