Stellenbosch seize the initiative with win over Sekhukhune in MTN8 semi-final

The match had a setback for Stellenbosch as early as the sixth minute when forward Ashley Cupido was forced off injured, with Lesbian Nku introduced in his place. Nku would go on to play a decisive role in the contest.

Sekhukhune, known as Babina Noko, threatened briefly in the 15th minute when Thato Khiba's error allowed Vusumuzi Mncube a sight of goal, but his effort was comfortably gathered by Sage Stephens.

Stellenbosch responded with purpose and made the breakthrough in the 22nd minute. Nku swung in a corner that was met powerfully by Nigerian defender Kazie Godswill Enyinnaya, whose header left Renaldo Leaner with no chance.

Ten minutes later, Stellenbosch doubled their advantage. A swift counter-attack was led by Nku, who threaded a pass to Devon Titus. The forward kept his composure to slot past Leaner, sending the home supporters into celebration.

The second half saw Stellenbosch create opportunities to extend their lead. Ibraheem Jabaar set up Titus early on, but he fired over, before Titus turned provider in the 54th minute, only for Nku's strike to crash against the crossbar.

With a two-goal cushion, Stellenbosch focused on discipline and defensive structure to deny Sekhukhune a crucial away goal. Despite sustained pressure, Babina Noko lacked the cutting edge to break through.

The tie now shifts to the New Peter Mokaba Stadium next Saturday, where Stellenbosch will defend their advantage while Sekhukhune aim for a comeback in front of their home fans.
