Steve Smith issues Pat Cummins update ahead of second Ashes Test

Steve Smith issues Pat Cummins update ahead of second Ashes Test

The 32-year-old had initially been left out of the squad for the day-night Test at the Gabba but on Tuesday, Smith did not rule out the possibility of captain Cummins to return to action.

According to the BBC, a meeting took place between Cummins, Smith, head coach Andrew McDonald and selector George Bailey on the square at Brisbane on Tuesday, with the Aussies announcing that they would not name their team until the toss.

"A whole heap of things are on the table," said Smith.

"We'll wait and see what the wicket looks like later and from there we'll determine a playing XI. He [Cummins] looks pretty good to me; he's bowled in the nets. Obviously, games are different intensity, but he's tracking nicely and he knows his body well."

Cummins reportedly could replace seamer Brendan Doggett, who made his Test debut in the first test in Perth, or Nathan Lyon if they decide for an all-seam attack.

"He's been bowling for a few weeks and pulling up well and ramping his numbers up. He's feeling good. He's bowling nicely in the nets, having faced him," added Smith to reporters.

The seamer could make his first appearance for the Aussies since July after suffering from a back injury.
