Stubborn Arrows edge Mamelodi Sundowns in first leg MTN8 semi-final

Abafana Bes'thende handed Masandawana a surprise loss and their first defeat of the season following a tough contest in Atterigdeville, which saw the African champions make many changes to the side that defeated Marumo Gallants in their last match. 

The home side started brightly with Lebo Mothiba seeing his shot stopped by goalkeeper Edward Maova after being put through on goal in the 11th minute, with the latter suffering an injury during the save, leading to him being replaced by Thakasani Mbanjwa.

Mothiba went close with a header after a good cross from Cassius Mailula in the 20th minute before Bennet Mokoena saw an effort routinely saved by substitute Mbanjwa.

Arrows took the lead six minutes later against the run of play with Sede Dion finishing off a swift counter attacking move to grab the lead before Sundowns teenager Bennet Mokoena saw his excellent effort expertly tipped around the upright by Mbanjwa shortly before the half-time break.

Portuguese head coach Miguel Cardoso made some changes early in the second half as he tried to get his side to equalize and score a winner during the match with Downs dominating possession throughout the game.

However, the visitors managed to maintain a resolute defensive display to keep their fifth consecutive clean sheet this season as well as continue their unbeaten record.

The two sides will turn their attention to their respective midweek Betway Premiership fixtures before facing each other again in the second leg in Durban on Sunday.
