Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey urges focus ahead of Mozambique quarter-final clash

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey urges focus ahead of Mozambique quarter-final clash

In an interview with the Super Eagles media team, the Fulham defender pointed to recent tournament surprises as a reminder to stay grounded.

"Never underestimate any team, you can't underestimate any team. Look at yesterday's game - Tunisia had eleven men and Mali had ten, and they still beat them," Bassey was quoted by All Nigeria Soccer.

Despite being tournament favourites, the defender emphasized that Nigeria's attention remains on executing their game plan rather than relying on reputation.

"On paper, we have all the big names, but for us, we are focused on ourselves and making sure we execute the plan. That's the most important thing," he added.

Bassey highlighted the importance of keeping a clean sheet and revealed discussions with fellow centre-back Semi Ajayi on communication and defensive organization.

"Being central defenders, organizing the backline, it's the little details - one step, clear communication - that make the difference going into the next stage," he explained.

He also praised the collective defensive effort, noting that protection starts with the players in front.

"They've been doing amazing, and we can improve on the small details," Bassey said.

Winger Samuel Chukwueze echoed the message, stressing the squad's readiness for any challenge.

"We are very calm, we know where we came from, and we are ready to face any team. Everyone from the starters to the bench is ready to give everything. The last three games show our determination to achieve our goal this AFCON," he said.

Nigeria, who have yet to keep a clean sheet in the tournament after conceding four goals in three group-stage matches, will be aiming for a more solid defensive performance against Mozambique.
