Super Eagles head coach shields team from AFCON pressure

Super Eagles head coach shields team from AFCON pressure

Despite a flawless group-stage record and a resounding 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the round of 16, Chelle is keen to prevent his team from being swept up by talk of AFCON glory.

Instead, he is emphasising focus, discipline, and the mental fortitude required to navigate high-stakes knockout football.

"I prefer to stay focused now on Marrakech," Chelle told Yahoo Sports.

"There is a game to play, and after the game, we can think about our accommodation. But now we go to Marrakech, and the story starts in Marrakech."

Nigeria has shown attacking prowess and defensive solidity so far, scoring eight goals while conceding just three in the group stage. But Chelle's approach underscores that past results are irrelevant in knockout football, where one misstep can end a campaign.

Chelle is conscious of the expectations piling on his squad, with pundits and fans alike tipping the Super Eagles as serious contenders for the title.

Yet he remains determined to shield his players from external pressure, keeping their attention on preparation and execution rather than prediction or hype.

"We have to stay focused on Marrakech, the training sessions, and the next game," he said.

"That is what will determine our performance on the pitch, not predictions or praise from outside."

Under Chelle, Nigeria's AFCON 2025 journey has become a study in composure and professionalism. The quarter-final clash against Algeria will test not only their technical abilities but also the mental strength Chelle has worked to instil.
