Thomas Frank admits doubt over Cristian Romero's long-term Tottenham future

Thomas Frank admits doubt over Cristian Romero's long-term Tottenham future

Romero made headlines again after Sunday's 2-2 Premier League draw with Manchester City when he posted on Instagram that it was "disgraceful" his teammates were left with only 11 available players after he was forced off through illness.

The 27-year-old's comments followed strong posts in January where he criticised communication from key figures at the club.

Despite the noise, Frank backed his skipper's current role. "That's a question I have no idea about," Frank said when asked about Romero's future. "Right now he is the captain, he has a long-term contract and we signed a new contract with him."

Frank refused to confirm whether any disciplinary action had been taken but dismissed suggestions the squad were in revolt, even though Romero's latest post was liked by teammates including Xavi Simons, Conor Gallagher and Dominic Solanke.

"It's all contextual," Frank explained. "Right now we have a few injuries. Of course injuries don't help but it's part of football. I think it's one person speaking up. We don't know if he speaks on behalf of all the players."

Tottenham have suffered injuries to nine players during 2026 but were inactive on the final day of the winter transfer window. Frank defended the club's recruitment, pointing to summer arrivals Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus, a loan move for João Palhinha and the signing of Conor Gallagher.

"I know the club is very ambitious," he said.

Reflecting more broadly on squad harmony, Frank added: "As long as they work hard and do everything they can on the pitch then I am happy. There is always a line you can't cross too many times."
