Understanding the UEFA Champions League format

As of the 2024/25 season, the tournament has adopted a new format known as the Swiss-style league, replacing the traditional group stage format.

New League Phase Format

Instead of 32 teams split into eight groups of four, the new format features 36 teams in a single league table. Each team plays eight different opponents in the league phase - four at home and four away. These matchups are based on seedings to ensure competitive balance, and no team plays another more than once in this phase.

After all eight matches are played, teams are ranked in a single league table. The top 8 teams automatically qualify for the Round of 16. Teams finishing 9th to 24th enter a two-legged playoff round, with winners also progressing to the Round of 16. Teams ranked 25th to 36th are eliminated from European competition.

Knockout Rounds

From the Round of 16 onwards, the competition follows a traditional knockout format. Each tie is played over two legs (home and away), with the team scoring the most goals on aggregate advancing. If the aggregate score is level, extra time and, if needed, penalties decide the winner - the away goals rule no longer applies.

The competition culminates in a single-match final, held at a pre-determined neutral venue, where the two remaining teams battle for the title of European champions.

Qualification and Importance

Teams qualify for the Champions League based on their domestic league performance, with stronger leagues awarded more places. Winning the Champions League not only brings immense prestige but also a place in the following season's competition and the UEFA Super Cup.

The new format aims to increase the number of high-stakes, high-quality matches while maintaining a fair and competitive structure. With more teams, more games, and more excitement, the revamped Champions League is set to deliver even more drama and spectacle for football fans worldwide.
