Vinicius Junior stunner rescues point for Brazil against Morocco

The Group C match that pitted No 6 and No 7 in the FIFA World Rankings against each other certainly lived up to the hype, with both sides creating chances in an exciting and well-contested affair that ended 1-1.

Morocco opened the scoring with a lovely chipped finish from Ismael Saibari in the 21st minute from the edge of the area after he had been played in by Real Madrid's Brahim Diaz.

However, the lead only lasted 11 minutes before Vini produced a moment of magic.

He received the ball on the goal line just outside the box on the left wing and managed to dribble his way into position before smashing it into the top corner to level the scores.

Both sides created opportunities to win the game in a match that did not lack for entertainment, but ultimately the spoils were shared.

Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti called for patience from the nation's fans after the match, saying World Cups aren't won in the first match of the group stage.

"I think this was a tough match, especially in the beginning. I think the team was a bit anxious and nerves were all over the place," he said after the game.

"We didn't play well, but we cannot lose heart. This is the first match in the World Cup, and we can't think the team is doing perfectly from the get-go.

"This was the result we had. It wasn't bad, but we'll keep picking up from the second match on. You don't win a World Cup based on your first match."

Vinicius Junior admitted they weren't at their best against a Morocco team that took them by surprise early on.

"We started on a really bad note. We conceded that first goal and after that happens it's hard to get it going, you know, it's the first match, it's always hard," he said.

"But we've got to improve and continue to grow because the competition is only just starting. This is the World Cup, there are no easy matches.

"But I don't think there's a lot to say now. I think we really have to improve."

Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi was happy to take a point from the game, but suggested his team perhaps deserved more on the day.

"It was a good match, it's a point. We would've hoped to have more but we'll take the point. We're happy, we're not sad today, but we would have liked to win," he said.
