Morocco sweat over Abdessamad Ezzalzouli's readiness ahead of AFCON later this year
Morocco's Africa Cup of Nations hopes have taken an early knock as concerns mount over the fitness of rising star Abdessamad Ezzalzouli.
Yasmin Mrabet converted a penalty just before halftime in a match dominated early by the hosts but ultimately decided by a single key incident.
Morocco applied intense pressure throughout the first half, with Ghizlane Chebbak - fresh off a hat-trick against DR Congo - missing two promising chances. Ibtissam Jraidi also saw a goal-bound shot cleared off the line.
The breakthrough came when 18-year-old Senegalese goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye led with her elbow into Jraidi's head while attempting to collect a cross. Following a VAR review, a penalty was awarded.
While Ndiaye was fortunate to escape a red card, Mrabet calmly slotted home the spot-kick to give Morocco the lead.
Morocco managed the second half with caution, focusing on maintaining their advantage. Senegal pushed for an equaliser but struggled to break down a disciplined Moroccan defence. Late drama saw both sides appeal for penalties, and Morocco had a second goal ruled out for offside.
With the win, Morocco finished atop Group A with seven points, level with Zambia but ahead on goal difference. Zambia also secured qualification after defeating DR Congo, who exit the tournament without a point.
Senegal, with just three points, are likely eliminated, as only the two best third-placed teams across the groups advance.
Joining Morocco and Zambia in the quarterfinals are Nigeria and Algeria from Group B, and South Africa and Mali from Group C - each of whom have secured at least four points, enough to guarantee progression.
