Wolfsburg boss Daniel Bauer admits Bayern Munich defeat was 'very painful'

The heavy loss came with Wolfsburg as the visiting side in Bayern's first fixture after the winter break, a match that ultimately exposed a clear gulf in class.

Despite the scoreline, Wolfsburg were not immediately overwhelmed. Bauer's side matched Bayern's intensity for large parts of the first half and even surpassed it during certain phases, showing early signs of resilience.

However, once Bayern found their rhythm, the contest quickly became one-sided. The Bavarians operated at a much higher level, with their speed in attack and sharp transitions proving decisive.

Bayern's front three were described as unstoppable as Wolfsburg suffered a complete collapse. The home side repeatedly carved open the defence, recording an extraordinary 47 touches inside the opposition penalty area.

Wolfsburg's defensive unit worked relentlessly under pressure, making 28 clearances and completing 26 tackles, but those efforts could not stem the tide. Bayern capitalised on nearly every meaningful chance they created, ruthlessly punishing any lapse.

"The bottom line is it's a very, very disappointing and very, very painful defeat. We need to apologize to our fans for the second half, who made to much effort to come and support us in this weather," said Bauer, via FC Bayern.

"We had two different halves. I think in the first we showed what we intended to do. We showed a lot of how we want to play. We were brave and implemented our game plan almost 100 percent.

"We need to do better with the chances we had in the first half, with the free shots from the edge of the area. You don't get many chances against a team like Bayern. You need to take them better. The goals we conceded in the second half were sometimes far too easy."
