Xabi Alonso explains why Jordan Henderson's experience will benefit Chelsea

Henderson made his debut for the Blues against Brentford, completing the entire match despite lacking some match sharpness. Alonso was impressed by the 35-year-old's endurance, believing the full 90 minutes represented an important milestone in his integration into the squad.

The former Liverpool captain used the international break to familiarise himself with Chelsea's tactical system, opting against taking additional leave so he could train and build relationships with his new team-mates.

Alonso has welcomed Henderson's determination to make an immediate contribution, highlighting his personality, dedication and extensive experience of league football as valuable qualities within the group.

The Spaniard also believes character plays a significant role in shaping his squad, while Henderson's understanding of the team's requirements is expected to improve with time.

"He didn't want many days off," said Alonso. "For him it was important to have the feeling of being back on the pitch after missing pre-season, missing the first games, and to feel how his arm was feeling and to have that confidence.

"It was important to unlock those first minutes on the pitch. That he was playing that tempo, that intensity for 90 minutes, it was good, and I think that now it will be getting better.

"We need the right players in terms of quality, in terms of personality, and Hendo has great personality, great experience in the league. Now we have had more time with him, he can connect very well with the players."
