Young Africans CEO Andre Mtine explains Manqoba Mngqithi appointment

The former Golden Arrows, AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns head coach was part of the Brazilians' technical team that won the CAF Champions League in 2016 under Pitso Mosimane.

In total he won 11 trophies during his time at Sundowns and has now begun a new adventure with the Tanzanian Premier League giants.

Despite their domestic success that includes 27 league titles, seven Tanzanian cups and nine Super cups, they had less impact on the continent.

Interim coach Abdihamid Moallin guided the club to the league title last term after Portuguese coach Pedro Soares Goncalves was sacked.

Mtine told FARPost: "Coach Manqoba has had an incredible career. When we looked at the qualities we needed, we were talking about experience, particularly in African football. He has coached in the CAF Champions League before, and that's something we value highly.

"We've had a relatively successful five years in league football, but we want to do better in the Champions League. We've reached the final [CAF Confederation Cup] only once in the last five years, and we'd like to become more consistent in competing at that level.

"To achieve that, we needed an experienced coach with a proven track record. We believe we've found the right fit to help us take the next step. We also appreciate his style of football. We think it suits Young Africans and African football.

“Experience in the CAF Champions League and continental competitions is crucial. You simply can't replace experience; you have to go through it to have it. That's one of the qualities Coach Manqoba brings.”
