Austin Smotherman rides hot putter to nine-under lead at Cognizant Classic
Austin Smotherman surged into the clubhouse lead with a flawless nine-under-par 62 at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches on Thursday in Florida.

The California native fired a second straight blemish-free round, posting a 64 that featured six birdies and a highlight eagle at the par-five 14th, where he chipped in from 47 feet out of thick rough. That effort lifted him alongside Hisatsune, who had set the early pace.
"Just building off last week. Played really nice last week, just starting to kind of catch my groove," said Bhatia, a two-time PGA Tour winner.
"I feel like my golf swing's in a really nice spot, shot options are in a really nice spot and starting to see some putts fall," he said.
Hisatsune followed his career-best opening 10-under performance with a steady five-under 67 at Spyglass Hill. Although he dropped shots at both the 18th and the opening hole after the turn, the Japanese golfer rebounded impressively, eagling the par-five seventh and adding a birdie at the ninth to close strongly.
Fowler also signed for a 64, finishing the day one shot back at 14-under in a tie for third with Sam Burns. Aside from a lone bogey at the 14th, Fowler's card was spotless, highlighted by nine birdies.
The 37-year-old, who is seeking his first PGA Tour victory since 2023, appears to be rounding back into form after an injury-hampered 2025 campaign that briefly saw him slip outside the world's top 100.
"My shoulder was bad all last year so I was just trying to manage and get through as best that I could," he said.
"My body and shoulder feel a lot better than it did last year."
Further down the field, World No 1 Scottie Scheffler recovered from an uneven start to the tournament with a six-under-par 66, moving to six under overall. After early nerves and a bogey at the 13th, Scheffler caught fire, holing out from 65 yards for eagle on the seventh.
Defending champion Rory McIlroy produced a mixed second round, signing for a 67 that included an eagle, five birdies and two bogeys. A closing birdie left him tied for 17th at nine under.
