Rehab Ryder: Tiger Woods stepping away from golf for treatment

The 15-time major winner clipped the back of a truck and rolled his Range Rover onto its side in Florida on Friday. Woods climbed out of the passenger side window and appeared injury-free.

Police on the scene had him perform a sobriety test, where he limped and stumbled. He blew a zero on the breathalyser, but refused to submit a blood and/or urine test. Police found two hydrocodone pills - a prescribed painkiller - in Woods' left pants pocket. It's estimated he was driving almost twice the legal speed limit.

Woods has since been charged with driving under the influence, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.

Speaking for the first time since the incident, the 50-year-old released a statement about his immediate future on Wednesday.

"I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today," it read.

"I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritise my wellbeing and work toward lasting recovery.

"I'm committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger and more focused place, both personally and professionally.

"I appreciate your understanding and support and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time."

The move seemingly ends all speculation about Woods' participation at the upcoming Masters. Masters chairman Fred Ridley confirmed that the five-time winner won't be at Augusta at all.

"Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being," he said.

"Although Tiger will not be joining us in person next week, his presence will be felt here in Augusta."

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp also expressed the Tour support for Woods during this difficult time.

"Tiger Woods is one of the most influential figures the sports world has ever known," said Rolapp.

"Over the last year, I have come to deeply appreciate Tiger not only for his impact on the game, but for his friendship and the perspective he has shared with me as I joined the golf industry. My thoughts are with him and his family as he takes this step, for which he has my full respect and support."
