The problem for the Scot is that the indomitable Scottie Scheffler is the man chasing him. MacIntyre carded a two under 68 around Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland on Saturday, enough to move to 16 for the tournament and four ahead of the chasing Scheffler, while Ludvig Aberg is alone in third on ten under.
MacIntyre endured an adventurous round. He almost lost his ball on the fifth hole, then miraculously made a two-putt from 70 feet to save par on the fifth. He ended the round with a 40-foot birdie to increase his chances of Sunday silverware.
"It was massive," MacIntyre said of his par save on the fifth.
"Look, every save, every shot is a prisoner for me. That shot there is no more important than that one I've hit on 18, any of the shots I've hit today. I've played beautifully all week, so it's just about continuing that going into tomorrow."
Meanwhile, world number one Scheffler had four birdies and a bogey for his 67 and is happy to be within striking distance come Sunday.
"I started the day five behind, the tournament was only halfway over, so there's a lot of golf," said the American.
"Bob has got a four-shot lead going into tomorrow and it's up to me. He's playing some great golf, and it's up to me to go out there and chase him down."
Harry Hall of England is tied for fourth with Sam Burns, eight shots behind the leader, while Rory McIlroy is on three under after a 71.
