Dan Brown on the cusp of unlocking the code at BMW International Open
England's Dan Brown will take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the BMW International Open in Munich on Sunday.
The 30-year-old led by one heading into the final round and he entertained the Golfclub München Eichenried crowd with an intriguing battle against fellow Englishman Jordan Smith.
The pair were flawless on the front nine as they shared the lead at the 20 under with some brilliant golf.
Brown briefly opened up a three shot advantage but the Northallerton native held on with nerveless putting to become the sixth English winner on the 2025 Race to Dubai.
He could have been distracted after losing a friend last week, but he was in complete control during a flawless 66 which saw him finish at 22 under, with Smith coming home in second at 20 under.
When asked what this victory means to him, Brown said: "A lot. The first one didn't really sink in, but that one was straight away hit me.
"I lost a friend at home last weekend. I don't know what to say really, but that was for him.
"The last two days I've been thinking about him to try and take my mind off it, obviously try not to get too emotional in the process.
"I'm not too sure what happened today like all day, it was an out-of-body experience. Obviously nerves, and then thinking about the importance of winning a golf tournament.
"It sort of played it down with what happened, I suppose he was there with me and it made it a lot easier.
"This event being such a great event, and then the next two weeks, it's a nice three-week stretch and it's been made a lot nicer."
Before the final playing group, Spaniard David Puig made an early bid with a stunning run of five under through his first six holes, courtesy of three birdies and an eagle.
That meant he was tied for second with Smith at 15 under, but the chasing pack were two shots behind Brown after an opening birdie.
The gap remained at two as Brown rolled in his second birdie from 20 feet at the next after it was matched by Smith on the same hole and Puig's gain at the seventh.
Puig's challenge derailed with a bogey at the eighth just as Smith made his charge at the fourth.
He rolled in from 25 feet for a birdie and then he narrowly missed his eagle effort at the next for a tap-in gain to get to 18 under.
Brown followed suit with a birdie on the same hole and then became the first player to reach 20 under at sixth.
Smith responded with a birdie at the seventh and when he tapped in another to finish his front nine, he joined Brown at the summit.
Smith slipped back with a dropped shot at the tenth, but bounced back with a birdie at the next.
The momentum swung back in Brown's favour as he birdied the 12th from six feet and when Smith carded successive bogeys from the 13th, the lead grew to three.
Smith asked the question with a calm birdie at the 15th to cut the gap to two shots, but that as close as he got.
Brown showed his composure by finding par-five last in two before tapping in for birdie to complete his second triumph at this level.
Smith also signed a final birdie for a closing 67 and a second straight runner-up finish at the BMW International Open.
New Zealand's Kazuma Kobori carded the joint lowest round of the week to climb into solo third at 18 under.
Dutchman Joost Luiten, American Davis Bryant and Norway's Kristoffer Reitan, who claimed top spot on the European Swing Rankings, finished in a tie for fourth at 16 under.
Home favourite Matti Schmid, France's Frederic Lacroix, Englishman Laurie Canter and Italian Francesco Laporta were one shot further back to wrap up the top ten.
