As the final event of the regular season, the Wyndham Championship offers players one last chance to break into the top 70 and qualify for next week’s FedEx Cup Playoffs, beginning with the St. Jude Championship.
Sitting 101st in the standings and needing a strong finish to crack the top 70, Dahmen delivered a timely performance at Sedgefield Country Club. He carded 10 birdies on the day, including a closing trio at holes 7, 8, and 9 to cap his round in style.
"I don't know if you ever see 61 coming, but I saw good golf coming," said Dahmen, who revealed he played 45 holes without making a bogey last week.
A win this week would vault the 37-year-old American to 48th in the standings, but Dahmen, whose lone PGA Tour victory came in 2021, was quick to point out that there was a lot of golf left to play.
"The playoffs are a bonus for me," he said. "I'm just going to go out and try to play good golf and I guess if I play really well then I get to play another week."
Dahmen holds a one-shot lead over Sweden's Alex Noren, who posted an eight-under 62 that featured an eagle on the par-five fifth.
England's Aaron Rai, Colombia's Nico Echavarria, and Americans Mark Hubbard and Cameron Young share third place at seven-under.
