Three-time winner Rory McIlroy urges rethink of FedEx Cup Playoffs structure
Rory McIlroy has voiced uncertainty over whether the FedExCup Playoffs truly delivers on its goal of crowning golf's season-long champion.
The Northern Irishman broke an 11-year major drought when he finally won the Masters in April. The feat also saw him become just the sixth player to complete the career grand slam.
Of course, the Masters winner is handed the famous green jacket and given McIlroy’s long wait for the hallowed garment, he's been surprised how little he's chosen to wear it.
"I'm reluctant to wear it," the 36-year-old told AP.
"It's not as if I wear it a lot. I have it hanging in my wardrobe in a place where I can see it every day. I always thought if I had one - if I did win the Masters one day - I'd never have the thing off, and it hasn't been that way. I haven't worn it as much as I thought I would.
"I've always said some of my favourite times at Augusta were when it wasn't the Masters Tournament. But it'll be lovely to go there next time and go up to the champions' locker room and put on my green jacket and feel like I belong."
That's not to say McIlroy doesn't like Masters merchandise. In fact, the five-time major winner went to the Augusta shop after his victory and asked how many pin flags were available.
"And we took all 1100," McIlroy revealed.
"It's been a lot, but I'll never get sick of signing them. I've waited 17 years to sign that flag in the middle, and I will never complain about doing it."
