Miles Russell books US Open spot with Tiger Woods' son Charlie on the bag

Russell, currently ranked the world's No. 10 amateur, had to dig deep in a tightly contested Florida qualifier. After finishing in a tie for the final available spot, he held his nerve in a playoff, recovering from a bogey on the first extra hole to claim the fourth and last qualifying position.

Following his breakthrough, Russell was asked whether Charlie Woods - who is also a close friend and shares the same commercial agent - might continue in the role when he tees it up at Shinnecock Hills. He kept his plans open, saying only: "We'll see what he's doing. To be determined."

The drama unfolded on a day widely referred to as "golf's longest day," when 10 final qualifying events were staged simultaneously on June 8 across the United States and Canada. A total of 715 players competed for just 43 remaining places at the 126th US Open.

The day produced several high-profile casualties. Former Ryder Cup players Tony Finau and Max Homa both missed out in their respective qualifiers in Springfield, Ohio, and Canada. Finau fell short by two strokes, ending his run of consecutive US Open appearances that had lasted since 2017. Homa, meanwhile, was denied for a second straight year, this time again missing out in a playoff.

Elsewhere in the Canadian qualifier, Ireland's Seamus Power and England's Matt Wallace also failed to progress. In contrast, Billy Horschel was among the five players who successfully advanced from the Ohio-Springfield event.

The final qualifying stage capped a global process that saw earlier events held in England, Japan, and Dallas, completing the field for one of golf's most demanding major championships.
