Rico Lewis rejects move, commits to Man City's future

Despite interest from Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur, both Lewis and manager Pep Guardiola have made it clear that the versatile defender's future lies at the Etihad Stadium.

Lewis, a product of City's academy, has already notched 95 appearances since his first-team debut in August 2022. Hailing from Bury, the young star has played a key role in the Citizens' recent triumphs, including the Champions League, two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.

His ability to excel as a full-back or in midfield has made him a standout talent, drawing attention from rival clubs.

Nottingham Forest took their interest a step further, tabling a bid of 25 million euros plus 5 million euros in add-ons, according to Foot Mercato. Manchester City, however, swiftly rejected the offer, holding firm for a valuation of at least 40 million euros for their homegrown gem.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano noted that Forest believed Lewis was "keen on the move" and planned to return with an improved bid, but recent developments suggest otherwise.

Following City's commanding 4-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, Guardiola addressed the speculation surrounding Lewis. "I think he's going to stay, I think. He told me that," the manager said, though he added cautiously, "Today, I think he's going to stay, but I don't know what's going to happen."

Lewis himself was unequivocal about his intentions. "For me, I've never, ever seen myself at a different club. I've always wanted to play for Man City," he said after the Wolves match. "It's my dream club, and when I'm playing with the kind of players I'm playing with, it brings out the best in me, so I'm so happy."

The Citizens' faith in Lewis is evident, with reports indicating they are preparing to offer him a new contract to reflect his growing importance. Currently earning around 25,000 pounds per week, Lewis could see a significant pay rise, rewarding his loyalty and rapid rise through the ranks.

Negotiations for a new deal have been ongoing, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that talks started months ago and are now intensifying.

While Nottingham Forest successfully signed City's James McAtee for 30 million pounds this summer, their pursuit of Lewis appears likely to end in disappointment. Tottenham Hotspur, along with other clubs like Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa, have also made inquiries, but City's resolve to keep their academy star remains strong.

Lewis's decision to stay underscores Manchester City's reputation for nurturing and retaining top talent. With his versatility, composure, and hunger to succeed, the England international looks set to remain a cornerstone of the Citizens' squad for years to come.

As the transfer window nears its close, all signs point to Lewis continuing to shine in sky blue.
