Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka share lead after 54 holes at Truist Championship
Ireland's Shane Lowry and Austria's Sepp Straka finished tied atop the leaderboard through 54 holes at the PGA Tour's Truist Championship.
The Austrian carded a two-under 68 in the final round at Philadelphia Cricket Club, enough to move him to 16 under for the tournament, two ahead of Lowry and a charging Justin Thomas.
Straka and Lowry were tied for the lead after round three and all indications were that it would be a duel for Sunday silverware in Philly.
The two-way battle went down to the wire, with both players tied up with nine holes to play. Lowry missed the green with his tee shot at the par-three 16th, while Straka hit to 30 feet. Lowry chipped out of the heavy rough but failed to convert a six-footer for par, falling a shot behind.
On the 17th, Lowry missed a potential tying 22-footer for birdie. The Irishman was again in trouble off he tee on the last, where he finished with a three-putt bogey.
This took all the pressure off Straka, whose two-putt par on the 18th green earned him his fourth PGA Tour title.
"It's huge, the biggest win of my career," the 32-year-old told AP.
"It's not the best ball-striking week I've had. Off the tee the first two days, I hit it terrible."
"The putter was just excellent this week. I made a lot of mid-range putts, and that's something you have to do when you want to win a golf tournament."
Thomas made a late run at the leaders with a three-under 67, while Masters winner Rory McIlroy would finish in T7 on ten under for the week.
"It was a good day," said Thomas.
"Obviously, I gave myself a chance. Starting three back to have a putt on 15 to tie for the lead, I definitely would have taken that at the start of the day. I fought hard, played well, and gave myself a chance, which is what I wanted."
