All Black hardman Shannon Frizell poised for NZ comeback and international return

All Black hardman Shannon Frizell poised for NZ comeback and international return

Frizell is set to rejoin the Highlanders for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season after finishing his stint in Japan. The 33-Test loose forward's NZ Rugby contract will see him back in New Zealand by mid-2026, placing him back in contention for All Blacks selection.

While playing overseas, Frizell was ineligible for All Blacks selection under New Zealand Rugby's policy requiring players to be contracted domestically.

Since moving to Japan for the 2023-24 season, the 32-year-old has impressed with Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo, helping the club secure consecutive Japan Rugby League One titles with his powerful carries and commanding presence in the lineout.

Frizell last appeared for the All Blacks in the 2023 World Cup final against the Springboks. He started the match but was yellow-carded after three minutes for a dangerous clearout on hooker Bongi Mbonambi, with South Africa eventually winning 12-11.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph praised Frizell's return.

"Shannon returning is a real bonus for the club. He knows our culture, works hard and will fit seamlessly into the environment," he said.

Steve Lancaster, interim CEO of New Zealand Rugby, added: "Any time a player with international experience returns home, it's a boost. It's great to see Shannon's desire to represent his province and country remains strong."
