Angola coach Patrice Beaumelle eyes fresh start against Bafana in AFCON opener

Historically, Angola have yet to beat South Africa in their four AFCON meetings, with two draws and two losses on record. However, Beaumelle, a two-time AFCON winner as an assistant coach with Zambia and Ivory Coast, is confident the history books can be rewritten when the side meet in tonight's match.

"Statistics get people talking, but reality is on the field on Monday night when the tournament kicks off," said Beaumelle.

"Every competition is different. Our goal isn't only to face South Africa but to start strongly and see where the tournament takes us. AFCON is a long journey, and the opening game is crucial."

Beaumelle acknowledged the challenge posed by a confident South African side, especially looking at their undefeated streak.

"They have gone 26 games without defeat. Their skill and speed make them a tough opponent. But for us, every match presents an opportunity, we win, draw, or lose, and we must stay focused for the games ahead," he said.

Group B features South Africa, Angola, Egypt, and Zimbabwe, a line-up the coach describes as demanding but motivating.

"We're not looking past any team. Playing a strong side like South Africa is a perfect test of our abilities, and we will fight to get a positive result," Beaumelle added.

The Palancas Negras enter the tournament with renewed determination, aiming to rewrite past results and make a mark in a competitive group.
