Bafana Bafana coach backs his team after frustrating goalless draw

South Africa dominated proceedings at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Friday but were unable to find a breakthrough against a Nicaragua side that largely focused on defending throughout the contest.

While the lack of goals was frustrating, Broos felt his players produced an encouraging display and deserved credit for the way they approached the match.
"I think we can be happy about the performance of the team even today, but if you play against such a negative opponent then it becomes very difficult," Broos told SABC Sport after the match.

The Belgian tactician criticised Nicaragua's approach, suggesting their defensive mindset prevented the game from becoming a more open contest.

"Those people came here for 90 minutes and defend, kicking the ball in front and then at the end injuries, one minute after the other, so yeah it was all very negative and for us very difficult," he said.

Bafana were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot but failed to convert, a moment Broos believes could have changed the course of the encounter.

"Yes, we missed a penalty. When we score there, I think we can score more goals also because then they will try something, but the opponent didn't try anything today except defending," he added.

Despite the stalemate, Broos believes the performance offered plenty of positives as South Africa continue their preparations for the World Cup.

The Bafana coach also confirmed that his side will play one more warm-up match before the tournament, with Jamaica set to provide the opposition on 5 June.

"We have another game on the 5th June against Jamaica. I hope that opponent will play football against us and that can be the first indication of the squad that will start against Mexico," said Broos.
