Bafana Bafana return without Orlando Pirates star Oswin Appollis as transfer talk intensifies

The senior national team touched down in Johannesburg on Thursday morning after completing their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, but Appollis was the only notable absentee from Hugo Broos' travelling squad, according to reports

His absence comes just days after fellow Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng remained in Europe to finalise his move to Belgian champions Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, leading to fresh questions over whether Appollis could be following a similar path.

While there has been no official explanation for why the 24-year-old did not return with the rest of the squad, the timing has inevitably fuelled transfer speculation.

Appollis has established himself as one of South Africa's most sought-after players following a superb first season at Orlando Pirates. The dynamic winger contributed 12 goals and nine assists in all competitions, helping the Buccaneers capture the Betway Premiership title.

His impressive performances have not gone unnoticed abroad. Last year, Major League Soccer outfit Chicago Fire made an official bid for the winger, but Pirates turned down the offer as they sought to retain one of their key attacking players.

Since then, Appollis has continued to enhance his reputation with consistently strong displays for both club and country, making an overseas transfer appear increasingly likely.

Although there is no official confirmation linking his absence to transfer negotiations, it has added to growing belief that the winger could soon become the latest South African star to make the move abroad.

Should a transfer materialise, Appollis would join a growing list of Bucs players taking the next step in their careers on the international stage, further highlighting the club's success in developing talent capable of competing overseas.
