Bongi Mbonambi backs forward battle as Sharks chase Stormers upset in Cape Town

The log-leading Stormers are unbeaten after eight Vodacom URC matches and have made the DHL Stadium a difficult venue for the Sharks, who sit 14th and are still searching for their first away URC win over their rivals. However, recent visits have been closely fought, with the Sharks losing by one and four points in their last two trips south.

"It's a traditional SA derby," said Mbonambi. "It's physical, intense and two quality teams going at each other for 80 minutes."

While past encounters focused on stopping the Stormers' backs, recent derbies have been shaped by forward dominance, particularly the Cape side's driving maul, which has been central to their rise to the top of the standings.

"Everyone knows how good their maul is," said Mbonambi. "They've weaponised it, so for us it's about detail and making sure everyone knows their role. We also back our own mauling game."

The Sharks travel to Cape Town amid a transition following the departure of head coach John Plumtree, with JP Pietersen taking over on an interim basis. Performances have improved, and Mbonambi credited Pietersen with building confidence and giving younger players opportunities in big matches.

Selection decisions could be key, with some senior players only recently returning from rest, while the Stormers are expected to regain key figures and again rely on a strong bench.

Despite the challenge, Mbonambi insists the Sharks are motivated by the chance to revive their URC campaign.

"At 35, what drives me is still my competitive edge and love for the game," he said. "When that goes, you know it's time to step off the dancefloor."
