Bradley Grobler reflects on Gavin Hunt exit: 'It came as a shock'

Hunt parted ways with SuperSport in March after a turbulent run in the 2023/24 Betway Premiership campaign. Despite a decorated past with the club-having won three league titles during his first stint - his second spell ended under pressure, with Matsatsantsa languishing near the relegation zone. At the time of his exit, the team had won just five league games and was sitting second from bottom. They eventually finished the season in 14th place.

Speaking to iDiski Times in edition 208, Grobler acknowledged that the coaching change came as a surprise to the dressing room.

"Yeah, I think it did come as a shock," Grobler admitted.

"A lot of us didn't expect it, but it's not up to us. As professionals, you need to kind of get on with it."

The 36-year-old, who has experienced numerous coaching changes over his career, said that while there was some disappointment, the focus quickly shifted to avoiding relegation.

"I've probably gone through this 20 times in my career. It's part of the job. As much as some players might have been disappointed, the team got on with it. Everyone knows they've got a job to do."

SuperSport struggled to turn promising performances into results during the season, a fact Grobler pointed to as a key frustration.

"We've been very good, I think, but it's just been one of those seasons. We had to grit our teeth, get through it, and make sure we stayed in the league."

Looking ahead, Grobler remains optimistic about the club's future, confident that the team can bounce back from a forgettable campaign.

"I believe next year can be a very good year for this team."

With a transitional period now behind them and the club set to refresh its squad and technical direction, all eyes will be on whether SuperSport can rediscover the consistency that once made them title contenders.
