Mokotjo, 34, unexpectedly departed the Betway Premiership side with several matches still to play, issuing a farewell statement on social media that hinted at surprise and disappointment. The former Bafana Bafana star had joined City earlier this season following a spell at Sekhukhune United.
Now that the dust has cleared, Peral reveals that there was no personal issue between the two and praised the player's professionalism during his short stint at the club.
"I don't know if I'm the right person to comment on Mokotjo's departure," Peral told reporters. "I think the decision was part of early planning for next season. From my side, I had no issues with him. He was a pleasure to work with—a true gentleman and a good player."
Mokotjo's exit comes at a precarious time for the Citizens, who are fighting to avoid the relegation playoff zone. Currently sitting 14th, Cape Town City could slip to 15th depending on SuperSport United's final fixture. If Matsatsantsa secure a point or more, City will be consigned to the playoffs.
Peral admitted the club is in one of its toughest periods but remains confident in the squad's ability to navigate the challenge.
"We've faced tough times before—though nothing quite like this," he said. "In past seasons, even when we lost, we often played well but were unlucky. This season, there have been performances where we let ourselves down. But we can't dwell on that now."
With the focus firmly on survival, Peral stressed the importance of unity and belief within the squad.
"We have to look forward, stay focused, and prepare for the playoffs. I believe in the quality of this group—we play good football, and that can carry us through. What matters most now is doing the job when it counts."
Peral also hinted at internal reviews already underway as the club looks to assess its missteps this season—though he was clear that retrospective analysis won't help in the current moment.
"There's already a process happening behind the scenes. But right now, that's not the priority. The priority is staying in the Premiership."
