Currie Cup: Griquas edge Cheetahs in tight encounter under the lights in Kimberley

It was the visitors that started strongly as lock Simon Miller powered over for the game's first try from close range after a sustained period of pressure.

The home team though was stung by that early setback and ran in three tries to a grip of the contest in front of a passionate crowd.

Hooker Tiaan Lange, loose forward Carl Els and scrumhalf Bobby Alexander all crossed for five-pointers as Griquas roared into a 17-7 lead that they took into halftime break.

The Cheetahs came out with renewed enthusiasm after the interval and replacement hooker Marko Janse van Rensburg crashed over for his team's second try after a rolling maul.

Griquas however extended their lead through another maul try of which Lange was the beneficiary with flyhalf George Whitehead converting from he kicking tee.

Prince Nkabinde showed great pace strength to go over for the visitors' third try of the night, with Cohen Jasper adding the extras to reduce the deficit to just three points.

Griquas though held on in a frantic final quarter to close out the contest and take a bonus-point win for their second win in three Currie Cup matches this season while the Cheetahs sufferd their first loss.
