Elias Mokwana credits Al-Hazem coach for Bafana Bafana return ahead of AFCON

Elias Mokwana credits Al-Hazem coach for Bafana Bafana return ahead of AFCON

He credited his coach at Saudi side Al-Hazem, Jalel Kadri, for reigniting his career.

The 26-year-old's journey has been far from smooth. After joining Tunisian giants Esperance in August 2024, Mokwana struggled for game time and eventually fell out of favour with Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, missing several national team fixtures.

Determined to revive his career, Mokwana moved on loan to Al-Hazem in the Saudi Pro League ahead of the current season. The decision has paid off, as he has featured in all nine league matches, contributing one goal and one assist, and has become a key figure in the team's lineup.

"It was a difficult period; I even lost hope that I would make it back to the national team," Mokwana told the media this week.

"But my coach, Jalel Kadri, kept me motivated. He worked with me on extra training sessions, always believed in me, and reminded me that I could return to Bafana Bafana."

Thanks to his improved form, Broos has recalled Mokwana to the national squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco later this month.

Mokwana expressed his joy at the call-up, emphasizing both gratitude and readiness to contribute.

"I was really happy when I got the call-up - it's been a while," he said.

"I haven't been in the best form, but I'm grateful for the opportunity and eager to help the team."

This will mark Mokwana's second AFCON appearance, having previously represented South Africa at the 2024 tournament in Ivory Coast, where Bafana Bafana secured the bronze medal.

With renewed confidence and form, Mokwana looks set to make an impact once again on Africa's biggest stage.
