England and India finely poised as rain forces early stumps on day three

England had responded to India's opening innings of 471 with a solid 465 before being bowled out.

Harry Brook fell just one run short of his century, on his home turf, as Jasprit Bumrah claimed five wickets to leave the first test evenly poised.

Brook departed the crease with England still 73 behind their opponents, but Chris Woakes weighed in with an impressive 38, including consecutive sixes off paceman Prasidh Krishna before being bowled by Bumrah, who ended his day with 5-83 in 24.4 overs.

England had resumed on 209-3, with Ollie Pope exactly 100 not out after coming in with the hosts in trouble at 4-1.

Pope though was out when trying to cut a wide ball from Krishna, he edged to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.

Fast bowler Siraj had England captain Ben Stokes caught behind for 20 with a delivery that cut away from the left-hander as he pushed outside off stump.

England were 327-5 at lunch, still 144 runs behind, with Brook 57 not out and Jamie Smith unbeaten on 29.

England were still more than a hundred runs behind and when Brook went into the 90s with a superb, lofted drive for six off Siraj.

But the tourists limited the damage thanks to Bumrah's blistering spell to mop up the tail and leave the match finely balanced.
