Enzo Fernandez dropped by Chelsea over Real Madrid talk

Enzo Fernandez dropped by Chelsea over Real Madrid talk

Fernandez, a key figure since his record move to Stamford Bridge after the 2022 World Cup, had recently spoken openly about his admiration for life in Spain. "I'd like to live in Spain. I really like Madrid; it reminds me of Buenos Aires," he said. "Players live where they want. I'd live in Madrid. I'd be more comfortable in Spanish."

Those remarks did not sit well at a time when Chelsea are struggling for form, having suffered four consecutive defeats that have dented their hopes of Champions League qualification.

Rosenior confirmed he had taken disciplinary action after speaking directly with the player. "We spoke with Enzo," he said. "As part of the football club, he won't be available for tomorrow or Manchester City. It's disappointing to speak in that way. As a character and person, I have no bad words. But a line was crossed. We had to make a sanction."

The Chelsea boss had previously defended Fernandez, insisting the midfielder had reassured him of his commitment. "He made it really clear to me that he is happy at this club," Rosenior explained. "He said things can get misconstrued in translation. He's fully committed."

Despite that, the club acted decisively, with reports suggesting the comments also caused tension within the dressing room.

On the pitch, Chelsea have been boosted by returning players ahead of the FA Cup quarter-final. Estevao Willian and Jamie Gittens are back from injury, while Levi Colwill has resumed full training after a long lay-off.

However, captain Reece James is still not ready, with Rosenior stating: "Reece is getting along really well, but not ready yet." Trevoh Chalobah is also continuing his recovery.

For now, the focus remains firmly on the pitch - but Fernandez's future has suddenly become a major talking point at Stamford Bridge.
