Prince Dube had put Zimbabwe into a 20th minute lead at Stade Adrar but Omar Marmoush levelled with 64 minutes on the clock before Salah popped up with the winning goal after 92 minutes.

The result put the Pharaohs level on three points in Group B with South Africa, who beat Angola 2-1 in their AFCON opener.

They next play Bafana in their second group game on Friday.

Speaking after the match, Hassan told reporters: "I had faith in Mohamed Salah that he would make the difference for Egypt, and he is of great moral importance to us.

"His goal was a message that he is capable of helping achieve victory, whether for his club or his national team."

Salah has been at the centre of a controversy surrounding his future qat Liverpool, with Hassan adding: "All appreciation to all the players, specifically Salah, because I know the circumstances he went through. Salah will be one of the best players in the tournament."
